Food City officials recently announced plans to join the Ace Hardware family of stores with one slated to open in Erwin later this year.

The supermarket retailer will launch its line of Curt’s Ace Hardware stores later this summer.

“We look forward to bringing Curt’s Ace Hardware store locations to the communities where we know there is a need,” said Food City President and CEO Steven C. Smith.

“Given our vast merchandising and marketing experience, I’m confident that our team will do an excellent job managing and operating these locations,” Smith added.

Smith said Food City is evaluating locations in Abingdon, Bristol, Piney Flats and Elizabethton, as well.

The Mize Farm & Garden Supply Co. in Gray was also recently purchased by Food City.

“We greatly appreciate the support that our loyal customers have shown us, and we want to leverage our Curt’s Ace Hardware brand to better serve the communities where we already do business,” Smith said.

Smith confirmed that Ace Hardware will open in Erwin sometime in the fall.

“What I can tell you is that we will be adding an Ace Hardware in the same strip that houses the Erwin Food City,” Smith told The Erwin Record. “We hope to open in the fall and will start looking at applications in mid July. We hope to hire 20 to 25 employees to start out and hope to have hours available on the weekend as well as the weekdays.”

Ace Hardware is known for its wide variety of top-quality products, including Benjamin Moore paints, Big Green Egg, Trager and Weber barbecue accessories, as well as power tools and equipment, hardware, lawn and garden and other home improvement supplies.

Town of Erwin Alderman Michael Baker said a store in Erwin would provide employment opportunities as well as another shopping option for residents of Unicoi County.

“This is huge for Unicoi County,” Baker told The Erwin Record.

The Erwin Food City opened for business on July 31, 2019, at 110 N. Industrial Drive. The Erwin store offers a pharmacy, equipped with a drive-thru for greater ease in prescription services, a Food City Gas n’ Go and GoCart curbside pick-up, which allows customers to shop online at foodcity.com and pick-up their order when they arrive at the store.

Food City will share more details as they become available. Visit the company’s website at foodcity.com for Food City store information, current happenings and company updates.
