Flag Pond residents arrested following pursuit

Two Flag Pond residents were recently arrested by the Unicoi County Sheriff’s Department following a brief pursuit.
According to Chief Deputy Frank Rogers, a deputy on routine patrol on Christmas Eve obaby Rodney Briggs, 44, 1342 Rice Creek Road, Flag Pond, traveling at a high rate of speed.
“The deputy attempted to pull the vehicle over as the vehicle approached speeds approaching 90 miles per hour on the Old Asheville Highway near the Ernestville community,” Rogers said.
After stopping the vehicle, the deputy spoke with Briggs and reportedly sensed the smell of marijuana.
“A search of the defendant revealed a bag containing pharmaceutical drugs for which the defendant was not in possession of a valid prescription,” Rogers said. “Additional evidence discovered indicated that the defendant had been in contact with a third party and the two of them were engaged in negotiation to buy or sell pharmaceutical drugs.”
Rogers also reported that a search of Briggs’ vehicle revealed marijuana, a pipe used for smoking marijuana and packaging used to conceal marijuana. Officers reportedly determined that Starlia Briggs, 47, 1342 Rice Creek Road, Flag Pond, was the owner of the marijuana and the paraphernalia.
Rodney Briggs was arrested and charged with reckless driving, possession of schedule III drugs for resale and possessing drug paraphernalia.
Starlia Briggs was arrested and charged with simple possession of schedule VI and possessing drug paraphernalia.
The vehicle driven by Briggs was seized, as was $280.
Both individuals are scheduled to appear in Unicoi County General Sessions Court on Jan. 8.
