Firemen continue to battle forest blaze

By Curtis Carden
Efforts continue today as various state and local fire fighters fight to control a fire burning inside the Cherokee National Forest off Scioto Road in Unicoi County.
Deborah Walker, District Ranger with Uwharrie National Forest in North Carolina provided an update from the base of operations on Scioto on Thursday, March 31.
“The first is 180 acres and 30-percent contained,” Walker told the media. “We’ll need 100-percent containment before the fire is under control.”
An expected storm front is expected to come through the region and push the fire toward the north, northeast part of the mountain, where firefighters are focusing containment lines. Work was focusing on building a containment line to push the fire near a recent prescribed fire near the Carter County line, in hopes of stopping the fire from pushing near Hampton.
