Area healthcare workers were treated with lunch to show gratitude from a very special organization on Thursday, Feb. 4. According to Farm Bureau Federation President Renea Jones Rogers, the local Farm Bureau Federation teamed up with Farm Bureau Insurance and their Agency Manager, Mark Peterson, to deliver Chick-Fil-A to more than 85 Unicoi County Healthcare workers.

“We were able to feed 65 workers at Unicoi County Hospital and 20 more front line heroes at the Unicoi County Health Department for a total of 85,” Jones Rogers told The Erwin Record. Jones Rogers explained that both the Farm Bureau Federation and Peterson’s Farm Bureau office in Erwin are always looking to give back to the community. “We try to give back to the community that has been so good to us,” Jones Rogers said. “This past year has been tough and we decided to honor those that worked the front lines.

According to Jones Rogers, the healthcare workers were thrilled with the gesture.

“We got tremendous feedback,” she said. “I got a call from the hospital administrator (Eric Carroll) who informed us that he had ‘an extremely happy staff.’ At the health department, we were also able to share food with the National Guard members that were working on site. It was a very good way to show our appreciation. This is something we hope to revisit in the future.”

The Farm Bureau Federation, Farm Bureau Insurance and The Farm Bureau Federation’s Women Committee are always looking to help the community in any way they can. “The federation has always done the ‘Fill the Ford’ food drive through our women’s committee. is often looking for ways to give back, Jones Rogers said. “The federation does a lot of work with the local FFA. We recently helped provide a cover for the greenhouse.”

One of the most notable events that Farm Bureau provides is the annual Ag Day event. Ag Day showcases the rich diversity of Unicoi County and how agriculture can provide long term career opportunities in Unicoi County. On Ag Day, Unicoi County students visit the Unicoi County FFA greenhouse, Farmhouse Gallery and Gardens, as well as Jones and Church to see agriculture in action. Unfortunately Ag Day was cancelled for 2020 because of COVID-19, but Jones Rogers is hopeful that in 2021, Ag Day, along with other Farm Bureau sponsored events, will be held in some capacity.

“We are planning on having Ag Day this fall,” Jones Rogers said. “We are preparing for a local Ag Day, in person event, but if that cannot happen, we will have a national online Ag Day.” Never one to stay idle long, Jones Rogers and Farm Bureau are already looking forward to the next event. “We are looking at a project to fill backpacks for area students and we hope to have more details soon,” Jones Rogers said.
