On May 4, UT Extension Unicoi County will be offering the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program. The eight-week program is designed for people with arthritis to reduce pain and stiffness, move more easily, feel more energetic, and just keep your muscles and joints healthy. Arthritis sufferers of all ages and mobility levels can benefit from the low impact course. Each class is designed to meet the needs of all participants. Classes will be held every Wednesday and Friday from 8:30-9:30 a.m. at the Clinchfield Senior Adult Center, 220 Union St., Erwin.
Arthritis affects 1.5 million Tennesseans and is the leading cause of disability in the United States. It is a chronic disease that targets the joints of the body. Common symptoms include joint pain, aching, stiffness and swelling. Though arthritis tends to be debilitating, it can be effectively managed through a variety of methods. Research has shown that exercise is an essential tool in controlling arthritis pain and fatigue.
For more information, or to sign up for the program, call Crystal Robertson, Extension Agent, at 743-9584, or Clinchfield Senior Adult Center, 743-4521.
Art league participating in exhibit
Watauga Valley Art League will be participating in the I Am Home member exhibit to start May 3 at Jonesborough Visitors Center, 117 Boone St., Jonesborough. The public is invited to enjoy the artwork of more than a dozen area artists and league members. The event will run through May 30.
There will be a meet-the-artist reception Friday, May 27, from 7-9 p.m. The reception is being catered by Jonesborough Regional Fine Arts foundation. President Pete Paulin will be at the reception to answer questions about the proposed Jonesborough artist co-op planned by the Foundation.
The I Am Home art show is a place to purchase Mothers Day gifts or a treat for your own home, since the original artwork, and prints of mostly local scenes are for sale. Your purchase will help support your local artists. At the May 2 installation, the public may be the first to see the new paintings find their places on the wall by the artists for the month long exhibit.
