Efforts to secure better fire rating could pay off for town of Unicoi’s residents, businesses

It may take up to four months, but the benefits could be worth the wait. Some Unicoi County residents and businesses might be able to lower their insurance premiums when the Unicoi Fire Department receives its revised Public Protection Classification number.

The rating is based on a 1-10 scale, and the Unicoi Fire Department currently has a score of 9.
“We’ve been that way since 1987,” said the department’s Lt. Dustin Ledford. The number affects
insurance policy holders within a five-mile range of the fire department.
