Registered voters have from Friday, July 15,  to Saturday, July 30, to make their way to the Unicoi County Election Commission office for early voting in the county general and state primary election.

The Commission’s office is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.

Administrator of Elections Sarah Fain noted some of the advantages to hitting the voting booths a little sooner.

“Early voting allows voters shorter lines and more machines to be able to cast their vote quickly,” said Fain. “We also strongly encourage anyone with a name or address change to early vote, as we will be able to make those changes much quicker than on Election Day.”

Fain also encourages voters to check out The Erwin Record’s July 6  print edition for a sample ballot before heading out to cast their vote. The ballot can also be found at

“Reviewing the ballot before voting ensures you know exactly what to expect when you come to vote,” Fain noted.

This year’s slate includes 24 judicial retention questions — a significant increase to the ballot.

Residents will need to bring a Tennessee or federally-issued photo ID before stepping into the voting booth. For paper ballots by mail, residents should call the UCEM offices at (423) 743-6521 for assistance in requesting a ballot.

The UCEM staff may also be reached by email at [email protected] for inquiries about early voting and other election questions.

In-person ballots for the August election can be cast from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 4.
