Donations being accepted for annual Community Day of Action

Unicoi County residents will once again have the opportunity to provide for students in need this school year during the annual Community Day of Action.
According to Regina Harrell, Coordinated School Health Supervisor for Unicoi County Schools, more than 300 students have expressed needs for food, clothing and school supplies, or a combination of the three. During the 2013 Community Day of Action, more than 400 students were served.
“Forms are sent home with all Unicoi County Students the beginning of the school year explaining the event as a community day focused on going back to school and offering services to students who are in need,” Harrell said. “Families are provided with a checklist of items that may be needed which includes clothing, specifically, jeans, shirts, underwear, socks and shoes. There is also a place to indicate if basic school supplies are needed.
“Additionally, there is information concerning the Second Harvest Food Bank which explains that Unicoi County partners with Second Harvest to provide a food backpack, every other week to students needing supplemental food,” she continued.
Harrell also said that donations are currently being accepted for the Community Day of Action.
“A $50 contribution will go toward the purchase of clothing for a student and will include shoes, jeans, shirts, socks, and underwear. A $35 contribution will sponsor a student for the purchase of school supplies ,including pencils, pens, markers, notebooks and a backpack. To sponsor a child with clothing or supplies, checks may be written to the United Way of Unicoi County,” she said.
“A contribution of $93 will sponsor a student for the food backpacks for the entire school year. Those wishing to sponsor a child with a food backpack may make checks payable to Second Harvest Food Bank.”
The school system, United Way and Second Harvest Food Bank join forces to hold the event. Members of those organizations staff the event; however, those wishing to volunteer should call Harrell at 423-743-7820.
All donations should be mailed to the Unicoi County Board of Education, 600 N. Elm Ave., Erwin, TN 37650 to the attention of Regina Harrell, Coordinated School Health.
The 2014 Community Day of Action is scheduled for Sept. 21 from 2-4 p.m. at the Walmart in Unicoi.
