Day: Petitions for vote on liquor sales by the drink are drawing support

John Day, who is helping facilitate petitions calling for a referendum on the sale of liquor by the drink, reported that the number of signatures already on the two petitions in Erwin and Unicoi County means there is support from the public to have a county- and city-wide vote in November.
“From what I can tell we’ve probably got around 130 signatures for Erwin and around 110 or 115 on county signatures,” said Day on Friday afternoon. “I think we’re going to see it on the ballot in November.”
Before the question can be placed on the November ballot, 153 signatures are needed in the city of Erwin, and 192 signatures are needed for the countywide referendum. The number of signatures is generated by taking 10 percent of the voters in the last general election held in Unicoi County on November 2010. Each signature would need to be from a registered voter who lives in the jurisdiction of either municipality.
