After nearly 30 years in public service, Unicoi County Mayor Garland “Bubba” Evely has informed The Erwin Record that he will not seek reelection during the 2022 election cycle.
“I will finish out my current term which ends in August of ’22 and will not seek reelection,” Evely said in an interview in his office. “I have enjoyed my time serving as mayor and am proud of what we have accomplished.”
Evely cited spending more time with family and travel as reasons he is not planning to seek reelection.
“I have served Unicoi County in some capacity for more than 29 years, and it was just time,” Evely said. “I’d love to spend more time with my family and to have time to travel. After seeing the effects of COVID and realizing those we lost, it really puts into perspective what’s important.”
Evely has a wish list of projects he would like to complete before retirement and said he is determined to get those done before leaving office in August.
