Community invited to enter inaugural holiday contest

Individuals and groups are invited to enter the inaugural Gingerbread House Contest, sponsored by Unicoi County Farm Bureau and coordinated by the Unicoi County Chamber of Commerce.
“We are very happy to be working with Farm Bureau on this contest,” said Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Amanda Delp. “We are excited to see what the contestants create for the contest. This is a wonderful opportunity for locals to showcase their talents.”
The theme of the contest is “Dreaming of a White Christmas,” Delp also said.
“Elaborate or simple, big or small, nothing gets you into the holiday spirit like building and designing your own gingerbread house,” she continued. “This is the perfect opportunity to start a new tradition and it’s never too early to begin working on this awesome event.”
The only rule for the competition, according to Delp, is that all materials, including the decorative items, must be edible, except for the base. The base cannot exceed 24-inches-by-24-inches. A half-inch or three-quarter-inch plywood base is suggested. Delp said cardboard bases will be accepted, but would not provide a sturdy base.
Non-edible decorations like paint, ribbon, figurines, etc., may be used only to decorate the baseboard and all candy wrappers must be removed, Delp said.
“Your entry does not have to be a house,” she added. “It can be a barn, church, school or other structure. Let your creative imagination take hold.”
Delp said entries will be judged on several criteria, including: overall appearance, design and difficulty; originality, imagination and use of materials; use of candy; use of color; and incorporating the theme into the design. Also, while the entries are on display at the Chamber, the public is invited to view them and vote for their favorite.
“This will allow the community to help pick the winner,” Delp said.
Awards will be given for first, second and third places.
“The first-place winning entry will receive $100, second place will receive $75 and third place will receive $50,” Delp also said.
To participate in the contest, pick up an entry form from the Chamber, 100 S. Main Ave., Erwin. For more information, call the Chamber at 743-3000. Registration is free.
Entries must be delivered to the Chamber by Dec. 15, at 5 p.m. The winners will be announced on Dec. 18. Entries will be on display at the Chamber until Dec. 22.
