Chamber, Record complete food drive
The Unicoi County Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with Second Harvest Food Bank and the Erwin Record, recently wrapped up their first annual holiday food drive.
The initial numbers were very promising. Between the Chamber of Commerce and the Erwin Record, the drive was able to gather three oil drum-sized barrels full of food to donate to the food bank.
We had heard that [Second Harvest] hadnt been doing well because of the economy so we wanted to help out, said Amanda Delp of the Unicoi County Chamber of Commerce. They are very pleased with the results.
The drive had a big impact all over the region, but Unicoi Countys results were very good, especially in terms of benefiting on the larger scale.
Across the county, Second Harvest distributed over 186,384 pounds of food to various churches and agencies throughout 2013.
Second Harvests Mobile Food Pantry distributed an additional 80,000 pounds of food to families in need.
Delp called the drive a success and believes the drive will have a significant impact in helping those in need around Erwin and Unicoi County.
