Centenary UMC preschool now accepting students

When Unicoi County students recently returned to their classrooms, so did the students of the preschool at Centenary United Methodist Church. Even though classes are already underway, teacher Christel Peterson said the preschool will continue to enroll students for the foreseeable future.
Peterson said the preschool, which has been in operation for 25 years, is state certified and that teachers and assistants receive training on different topics to prepare them for the preschool classroom. She also said the preschool follows a standard curriculum.
“The curriculum gives you a plan to go by,” she said. “The state likes to see that you have a curriculum.”
In addition to the classroom instruction, Peterson said the preschool encourages the students to get out in the community with their families. She said the school will combine its curriculum with local events, such as the Apple Festival, to keep the students interested in the lessons and the community.
“There are three goals you want,” she added. “You want the child when they leave to be excited. You want them to tell their parents when they leave about what they did … be able to vocalize. The third thing is you want them to be tired. Because then you know they’ve had a full day.”
The preschool also offers Christian education, Peterson said.
“It’s more like family. We do Christian education, too,” she added. “We learn Bible verses; we do story time. We have one day a week that we consider chapel time when the pastor will come in.”
Working with Peterson this school year will be assistant Christa Byrd.
“If you want your child to have fun learning, gain confidence, gain friendships and knowledge about the Bible, Centenary is the place,” Peterson said.
Centenary UMC preschool is open to children ages 3-5. Classes are held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to noon. To register a child, call the church office at 423-743-4342 between 8:30-11 a.m. Tuition is $155 per month.
