Christmas just wouldn’t be the same without a visit to Unicoi’s Bogart-Bowman Cabin for a chance to meet with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

The Old Fashioned Christmas has been a tradition for well over a decade now in the historic cabin.

“We have been doing the Old Fashioned Christmas since 2009,” said Unicoi History Group President Leisa Willis. “The Town of Unicoi is going together with us this year helping with different things such as food and the tree.”

The Christmas event will feature live music, food and much more.

Dulcimer players Sandra and Richard Lambert will perform under the name The Butternuts to provide music for the event.

“We will have mostly finger foods, candy and cookies and dips of different sorts,” Willis said.

There will also be a candy cane hunt, caroling and a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus.

The Old Fashioned Christmas has grown considerably since its beginning.

“The first event we did with $50 and a lot of volunteers who baked cookies,” Willis said. “And it grew from there. It gives people something to do with their families that doesn’t cost them anything in their own community. It gives us a lot of joy to see the kids’ faces when they get to see Santa.”

At the center of the history group’s Old Fashioned Christmas is the Bogart-Bowman Cabin in Unicoi. The town purchased the cabin and the surrounding property in 2008.

The Old Fashioned Christmas is planned for Saturday, Dec. 11, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Bogart-Bowman Cabin, which is located at 5012 Unicoi Drive.

Anyone interested in learning more or joining the Unicoi History Group can attend one of the organization’s meetings. The group meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. inside the Bogart-Bowman Cabin.
