By Richard Rourk

A body found in Unicoi County over Memorial Day weekend has been sent to William L. Jenkins Forensic Center at East Tennessee State University for an autopsy.

“At the request of First District Attorney General Ken Baldwin, TBI special agents are working alongside the Unicoi County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the circumstances leading to the death of a Johnson City woman,” TBI Public Information Officer Leslie Earhart told The Erwin Record.

“On May 30, just after midnight, the body of Athena Saunders, 48, was discovered just off a gravel road near the Unaka Mountain Beauty Spot,” Earhart said.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
