Board won't back call for new CEO

County Commission chairperson and Unicoi County Memorial Hospital Board of Control member Sue Jean Wilson formally requested that the board ask its president and chief executive officer, Jim Pate, to resign from his position after a discussion about the hospital’s debt and finances at the board meeting held March 21.

“Under the current situation that we find ourselves in and according to total operating expenses
and losses since 2004, I think the board needs to deeply consider asking Mr. Pate to resign and to look
at asking Linda Stewart to retire, putting Toni [Buchanan] and Roland [Bailey] in charge until we find a new CEO,” Wilson said. “If this isn’t agreeable with the group, I think we need to do a survey not signed by the employees as to whether or not they think that the hospital is being administered properly.” Stewart is the head of the hospital’s laboratory department.

Wilson’s motion did not receive a second. Bailey, a board member, told the board that had the motion passed, he would not have accepted the position.
