Board cancels meeting with health systems

On Friday, Nov. 16, the Unicoi County Memorial Hospital Board of Control issued a notice of a meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 20, at 4 p.m. in the boardroom at the hospital.
“This meeting will be called to order at 4 p.m. and will immediately move into strategic planning session,” the notice states. “The purpose of the strategic planning session is to work with the attorneys from McGuire, Wood and Bissette, PA on the proposed hospital transaction.”
The board previously met in a strategic planning session with the attorneys on Nov. 7.
The notice of the Nov. 20 meeting was issued the day after the UCMH Board of Control announced the cancellation of a closed strategic planning session between the Board and the two health systems seeking to acquire the hospital set for Thursday, Nov. 15.
In a notice sent to local media outlets on Nov. 12, the Unicoi County Memorial Hospital Board of Control announced that it would meet in this called meeting on Nov. 15. The notice stated that the board would meet with both Mountain States Health Alliance and Wellmont Health System in a strategic planning session that would be closed to the media and to the public.
“This meeting will be called to order at 3 p.m. and will immediately move into strategic planning session for the purpose of presentations and a questions-and-answer session with both Mountain States Health Alliance and Wellmont Health System,” the notice issued on Nov. 12 stated.
Board of Control Chairman Glenn Tilson did not provide a detailed reason for the decision to cancel the meeting last week.
“We decided to cancel it,” Tilson said in a telephone interview Thursday afternoon.
Tilson also said the board does not plan to reschedule the meeting with the two health systems. “No,” Tilson said. “We don’t plan to.”
Plans for the board to continue their deliberation of the two proposals are to be announced in coming days, Tilson said.
“We are planning to send out a notice within the next day or two about when we will do that,” Tilson also said on Thursday.
The UCMH Board of Control met for a regularly scheduled board meeting on Monday, Nov. 19, following The Erwin Record’s press deadline.
