It was a case of Mountain City magic for the Longhorns Monday night.
Johnson County went on a 27-12 run in the fourth quarter and netted four players in double figures to upset the Unicoi County High School Blue Devils, 66-55, during the semifinals of the District 1-AA tournament.
UCHS (23-6) faced Sullivan South, who fell to Elizabethton, 66-60 on Monday, for third place on Tuesday, Feb. 18, after The Erwin Records press deadline.
The third-place consolation will decide where the Blue Devils will go in the upcoming Region 1-AA tournament. With a win over Sullivan South, Unicoi County will travel to the loser of the District 2-AA championship between Greeneville and Chuckey-Doak. With a loss to South, the Blue Devils will travel to the District 2 champions.
Their gameplan was to attack and they exactly did that, Johnson County head coach Austin Atwood said. Once our guys figured out if we could keep them out of the paint and limited to just one shot down low, we had a chance.
Blue Devil senior post Connor Simpson (seven points) went down with an ankle injury and senior Nic Chambers was in foul trouble late to add to the uphill battle UCHS faced after a 31-23 lead at halftime.
