Another candidate joins race for sheriff

Another county resident has thrown his hat into the ring in the race for sheriff.
According to information from the Unicoi County Election Commission, Don W. Whitson of Unicoi took out a petition to run for sheriff as an independent candidate in the Aug. 7 Unicoi County General Election. As of The Erwin Record’s press time on Feb. 11, Whitson had not returned his petition.
Also according to information from the Election Commission, three other county residents have taken out petitions to be candidates for Unicoi County Sheriff in the May 6 Unicoi County Republican primary, including Mike Hensley, the current sheriff.
Jim Lengel, who ran against Hensley in August 2012 to complete the unexpired term of Kent Harris following his retirement, has also taken out a petition to be a candidate for sheriff in the Republican primary.
Tony Buchanan, an investigator for the Erwin Police Department, is also seeking election to the position of sheriff.
Buchanan, Hensley and Lengel have all returned their petitions to run in the primary.
