Animal Welfare Board holds meeting

The Unicoi County Animal Welfare Board held a meeting on Aug. 12.
The meeting moved along smoothly throughout the morning. The board voted unanimously to accept the minutes from the June meeting as well as for the called July meeting. The board also unanimously voted to approve the treasurer’s report.
Towards the end of the meeting, Unicoi County Animal Shelter Director Jessica Rogers gave her report. Rogers brought several items to the board’s attention. On Sept. 20, the shelter will be hosting a rabies clinic from 10 a.m. to noon. The costs are $10 and $15 for rabies and combo vaccines respectively.
A Yankee candle fundraiser will be held from Sept. 2-23. The shelter will receive 40 percent of the sales from each item. Those interested in acquiring a candle to sell items and thus help the shelter are encouraged to get in touch with Jessica Rogers.
The shelter will be participating in National Petsmart and Petsense weekend from Sept. 12-14. Petsmart also hosted a canned food drive for the shelter, which Rogers reported was a major success. The shelter also received another major shipment from the Rescue Bank on August 11.
At Halloween Express, in Johnson City, in October, the shelter will be hosting a bake sale and adoption event.
Rogers reported that July 2014 adoptions were double those of 2013.
