2010 races sparking voter interest

The registration deadline to vote in the Unicoi County Republican Primary is approaching, and dozens of new voters are showing an interest in the 2010 races.
Administrator of Elections Sarah Bailey said individuals who wish to vote in the May 4 primary and early voting from April 14-29 have to be registered to vote by April 5.
Since January, the office has seen an increase in new voters with 146 new registrations.
“We have seen a big upswing in voter registration,” Bailey said. “Generally, we get a couple each week, but we have definitely had more than that.”
Generally, the voter turnout for the county’s primary election is 30 percent, or around 4,000 voters. Currently, there are 11,193 registered voters in Unicoi County.
Bailey stressed that if a person has not been registered to vote in Unicoi County before, that person will need to register before the deadline. However, if a person has been registered before in Unicoi County and moved to a different address, that change can be made during early voting or on election day. But, to save any waiting or complications, it is recommended that changes be made before the April 5 deadline.
Registration can be done at the Unicoi County Election Commission, Unicoi County Health Department, Department of Human Services or at the motor vehicle office.
