‘Something of our own’

Unicoi County Habitat for Humanity Home Build 2012 is gearing up to build a home for a recently selected family of three.
Elizabeth Pridgen, Chris Odom and baby Skyler were suggested to Habitat for Humanity President Gloria Mouton by their landlord.
“We’re very blessed,” Odom said. “It’s a great honor to have these opportunities to be like this. Everybody struggles and it’s just great that we got chosen through these hard times. We have an option and opportunity to do this.”
Pridgen said she looks forward to owning something of her own.
“We are building something of our own,” Pridgen said. “We get to build a foundation.”
The process it takes to build a home, Odom said, will be the most rewarding part of the experience.
“It gives you good grounds for knowing that you put your heart, sweat and back into something that’s yours,” he said. “We aren’t going to take this for granted like a lot of people do.”
The family was very gracious for all the help from community members.
Mouton said it was great to see so much community support for the family.
“It’s just a great joy, tremendous excitement and real blessing,” Mouton said. “It’s a long journey. This is just the beginning. It’s a long journey to finish this house. There will be lots of things going on.”
Mouton said the next step is starting to build the structure this month. “The goal is to finish it by May 1,” Mouton said.
Mouton said the only way to meet this goal is to have even more community support and volunteering. “Every single day we build we need lots of volunteers,” she said.
