Mrs Birdie S Gilbert -
Mrs Birdie S Gilbert was born on the 19th of August 1918 as Birdie Simmons, daughter of Nick and Florence Simmons. Birdie passed away in her sleep on 10/07/2015. As her nephew I grew up thinking of her as a child might a Movie Star. She was full of life, beautiful, glamorous and absolutely fearless. She traveled extensively in Europe in the 1950's and lived abroad as well as NY City. She retired from Pumphrey Funeral Home in Bethesda, Maryland as executive assistant to the director. She had a full life and many wonderful memories. She leaves behind 3 brothers; James, John and Grady Simmons; 1 Sister, Izabell Newcomb and several nieces and nephews. She had a dear friend, Sheila Miller, who will miss her terribly as will I.
Sara Lee Edwards Wetherholt -
Sara Lee Edwards Wetherholt, age 87, of Erwin, passed away at the Center on Aging and Health in Erwin, TN, on October 7, 2015. Sara was born in Erwin to William (Frank) and Maxine Edwards. She attended the Unicoi County High School, and married Lloyd Hensley in 1944. They were divorced in the late-1940s, following their move to Detroit, MI. She met Jay Wetherholt while working at the Cadillac Division of General Motors in Detroit. They were married in April 1954, and she became a full-time homemaker, devoting herself to raising two sons. She and Jay relocated to Erwin following his retirement in 1990. She was a member of the Ninth Street Baptist Church and was known as a loving and caring person who willingly gave of her time to help others over the years. She and her husband, Jay, enjoyed the Erwin community and participated in many activities, including the publication of the book, Unicoi County, Tennessee And Its People 1875 – 1995. She loved God, her family and Erwin dearly. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jay; her brothers, Steve Edwards, James Edwards, Albert Edwards and her sister, Grace Lee (nee Edwards).

Annabelle Britt Stanley, age 80, of Unicoi, passed away on Thursday, September 10, 2015, at the Center on Aging and Health. She was a native of Unicoi County and a daughter of the late Jess and Gladys Isaacs Britt. Annabelle was a member of Unaka Springs Freewill Baptist Church and was a former member of Unicoi Freewill Baptist Church. She enjoyed camping, fishing with her husband and became a Florida “Snow Bird”.
Douglas M. Wheeler -
Douglas M. Wheeler, age 73, of Erwin, passed away Saturday, September 12, 2015 at Johnson City Medical Center. He was a native of Madison County, North Carolina and a son of the late Mattie and Ada Blankenship Wheeler. Douglas graduated from Mars Hill High School in 1960. He worked for the former National Casket Company, G.M.F. Manufactures. He then worked as a bus driver for the Unicoi County School System and Migrant Head Start. Mr. Wheeler retired in 2003. Douglas was of the Baptist faith and was baptized at a very young age. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by brothers, Vance B. Wheeler and Sam Wheeler.

Katherine K. Edwards, age 56, 690 Vinton Avenue, Erwin passed away Thursday, September 10, 2015 at her residence. She was a native of Owosso, Michig an but lived in Unicoi County for the past twenty-seven years. Mrs. Edwards was a daughter of the late Albert Francis and Ruby M. Teets Francis DeLaney. She attended Higgins Chapel Baptist Church. Mrs. Edwards was employed by White's and IGA grocery store where she was Head Cashier for eleven years. She leaves behind to cherish her memories Danny Edwards, husband of thirty-seven years; one son, Corey Edwards, Erwin; one daughter, Tiffany Baucom and husband, Scotty, Erwin; four brothers: Charles Francis, Timothy Francis and wife, Tammy; Albert Francis, Jr. and wife, Teresa; Jeff Francis and wife, Chris, all of Michigan; one grandson, Dustin Baucom, Erwin; one granddaughter, Haley Baucom, Erwin; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Cecil Frazer Renfro, age 89, 273 Toll Branch Road, Johnson City, and formerly of Erwin, passed away Friday, September 4, 2015 following a lengthy i llness. He had lived most of his life in Unicoi County and was a son of the late Tom Renfro, Sr. and Mittie Hampton Renfro. Mr. Renfro was a WWll U.S. Navy veteran and was assigned to the 2nd Marine Division as a radioman and mapper at the Battle of Tarawa in Gilbert Islands going ashore November 20, 1943. After the war he joined the U.S. Army, serving several enlistments. He was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Renfro retired as a groundsman for a local golf club. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Thomas B. Renfro, Ray Renfro and Jesse Renfro; three sisters, Ruby Adkins, Ella Vanover and Thelma Renfro.

Luecita Crain Harris, age 95, Flag Pond passed away Wednesday, September 2, 2015 in the Mountain Ridge Health and Rehab following a lengthy illness. She was a lifelong resident of Unicoi County and a daughter of the late Lattie Raegan and Martha Edwards Crain. Mrs. Harris had been employed by Industrial Garment as a seamstress for sixteen years. She was a member of the Higgins Chapel Baptist Church and became a Christian at the age of ten. Mrs. Harris loved going to church, gardening, reading and sewing. Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wade Estil Harris on June 23, 1982; sisters: Pansy Mashburn, Dullie Edwards, Atlas Anderson, Verna Edwards and two infant sisters; brothers: Paul Crain, Floyd Crain and one infant brother.

Mr. Deward Gene Bailey, age 82, 1623 Jackson Love Highway, Erwin passed away on Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at the Johnson City Medical Center. Mr. Bailey was a lifelong resident of Unicoi County and a son of the late Jeff and Dora Simmons Bailey. He had been employed by the Unicoi County Highway Department as a mechanic and retired from the Unicoi County Board of Education where he was maintenance supervisor. Mr. Bailey had been employed by Unicoi County for a total of thirty-nine years. He attended Erwin Church of Brethren. Mr. Bailey was Past Master of Centennial Lodge #491, Erwin, member of Jericho Shrine Temple, Unicoi County Shrine Club, Eastern Star Chapter #276, R.D. Keller Chapter #214, Royal Arch Masons and B. E. Wooten Council #119. He enjoyed volunteering to raise funds for the Shriners Hospital. Mr. Bailey loved gardening and sharing his fresh vegetables with family and friends. He loved to help people. Mr. Bailey read and studied the Bible daily. He enjoyed spending time with family especially his grandchildren, Josh and Brianna.

Daryl Lynn Shelton, age 63, of Erwin, passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2015 at his residence. He was a native of Erwin and a son of the late Willard and Marie Peake Shelton. Daryl worked as an electrician with the former Clinchfield Railroad, Daniel’s Construction then with Osborne Electric for many years.

Estil Edwards, age 83, of Erwin, passed away on Friday, August 21, 2015, at Lakebridge Health Care. He was a native of Unicoi County and a son of the late Arthur and Ada Pearl Price Edwards. He retired from the United States Navy as Chief Boatswain Mate following twenty years of service. Then he worked in Civil Service for eleven and half years as a manager for a Military Facility in S.C. He then retired as a Deputy Sheriff following eleven years of service with the Unicoi County Sheriff’s Department. After retiring with the Unicoi County Sheriff’s Department he continued in a volunteer capacity for about three years.

Gene B. Bennett, age 72, of Erwin, TN, passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2015 at his residence. He was a native of Bangor, Maine and was a son of the late Raymond and Thelma Bickford Bennett. He grew up and lived his working career in Atlanta, GA. He had a lifelong interest and love for aviation and sailing. Gene was an air traffic controller stationed in Adak, Alaska during his military service with the United States Navy. He earned his commercial pilot license. He spent his working career with Delta Airlines in Atlanta, GA as a loyal and devoted employee retiring as a Telecommunications Project Coordinator. He has lived in Erwin, TN for the past 12 years.

Ruby Harrell Garland, age 92, of Unicoi went home to Heaven today, August 24, 2015, to join her beloved Alvin. Ruby was born February 20, 1923 to t he late Charlie and Daisy McCurry Harrell in North Carolina and came to Unicoi with her parents in a covered wagon. She was an employee of Southern Pottery for sixteen years. Ruby was a member of Unicoi Baptist Church where she served as Treasurer and Sunday School Teacher for twenty years. Other than her parents and brother, Buford Harrell, Ruby was preceded in death by her loving husband of sixty-three years, Alvin Garland in 2010. Ruby loved life on the farm with Alvin and said it always gave her comfort and peace.

Vivian Chandler Callahan, age 88, of Erwin, passed away Monday, August 24, 2015 at the Unicoi County Memorial Hospital. She was a native of Unicoi County and a daughter of the late Lusious and Emma Foster Chandler. Vivian had retired at the Unicoi County Memorial Hospital in housekeeping, Industrial Garment and also James’s 5 & 10. In addition to her parents, Vivian is preceded in death by her husband, Fred “F.T.” Callahan, son-in-law: Mike Light, sister: Beulah Tilson, brothers: Harold Chandler and Glen Chandler, Niece: Kathryn Ambrose.

Daniel Edward "Danny" McCurry, age 49, Erwin, passed away Sunday, August 16, 2015 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born in Flint, Michigan and had lived in Erwin most of his life. Mr. McCurry was a son of Faye McCurry of Erwin and the late Richard Eugene McCurry. He was a construction worker and had been employed by PPM. Mr. McCurry was a member of Faith Baptist Church. Other than his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Eugene "Chad" McCurry.

John C. Hargus Sr., 79 of New Market, went to be with the Lord at his home on August 18, 2015. He was born to Boyd William and Dora Baker Hargus on May 20, 1936. John was a member and Deacon of Gospel View Free Will Baptist Church and a retired employee for the Tennessee Department of Transportion.

Joseph W Sheehy, age 66, of Erwin, passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2015, at the U C M H Long Term Care. He was born in Buffalo, N.Y. A son of the late Joseph S and Arlene F Schroeppel Sheehy. He had been a member of Erwin’s Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge # 939 since 2010. Joseph was a pipefitter and a member of the United Association of Pipefitters, Local #22.

McDaniel “Danny” English Sams, age 75, of Erwin, passed away on Wednesday, August 12, 2015, at Unicoi County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Faust, NC. He was the son of Paul English and Inez Wing Sams. He worked for the former Clinchfield Railroad in various departments and later retired from the State of TN, Department of Children’s Services. He was a member of Erwin Presbyterian Church. He graduated from East Tennessee State University and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity.
Nancy Carolyn Bible -
Nancy Carolyn Bible, age 72, of Erwin, passed away on Monday, July 13, 2015, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She was a native of Unicoi County and a daughter of the late Bill and Gladys Gouge Lyle. She was a loving homemaker and a member of Ninth Street Baptist Church. In addition to her parents Nancy is preceded in death by her husband, L.B. Bible in 2006.
Lake Johnson Rice -
Lake Johnson Rice, age 93 of Erwin, passed away quietly after a short illness on Monday, July 13, 2015 at her residence. She was born in Wilder, VA to the late Ira and Delphia Kiser Johnson, grew up in Cleveland, VA, and lived most of her life in Erwin, TN. She graduated from Milligan College in 1942 where she met her future husband. Lake was the May Queen her senior year at Milligan College. Interestingly, during World War II she worked for a short time at Oak Ridge, where she was indirectly involved in helping to produce the first atomic bomb. Mrs. Rice taught at the Unicoi County High School for 20 years where she primarily taught English and Business courses. After the passing of her husband, Robert E. Rice, Lake lived independently for 35 years atop “Elephant’s Back Hill” in Erwin. She loved her family and taking care of her many adopted critter friends.

Tommy J. Brackins, age 56, passed away on Monday, July 14, 2015, at his home. He was a native of Unicoi County and a son of Leonard Thomas and Alice Dene Brackins of Erwin. Mr. Brackins worked for the former Vesuvious of Erwin for over 25 years as a furnace operator. Tommy was of the Baptist faith.
