Janie E. Arwood -
Janie E. Arwood, age 68, of Erwin, passed away on Monday, April 21, 2014, at the Johnson City Medical Center. She was a daughter of the late Robert C and Dorothy E. Fanning Pauley. Janie was a life long member of Southside Freewill Baptist Church where she had numerous friends, loved ones and family. She enjoyed worshiping, singing and other fellowships at Southside from its beginning. In addition to her parents, Janie is preceded in death by two brothers: David and Bobby Pauley; sister: Sherry Pauley.
Lucille Elliott Dunbar -
Lucille Elliott Dunbar, age 92, of Erwin, passed away on Monday, April 21, 2014, at Unicoi County Memorial Hospital. Born in Unicoi County on April 23, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Walter Logan Elliott and Nelle Morris Elliott Beckelhimer. Mrs. Dunbar was a school teacher for 35 years, having taught at the former Martin Chapel School. She graduated from East Tennessee State University. Lucille was a member of the Eastern Star and the Business and Professional Womenís Club. She was a member of Evergreen Free Will Baptist Church for over 65 years. Mrs. Dunbar worked closely with young people, sponsoring youth activities locally and on the association level. She produced church dramas with the youth and taught Bible School for many years. She was a Christian example for school children and gave Bibles out at school for rewards. For many years she taught Sunday school and was the superintendent of the Primary Department.
Phyllis Eileen Moore -
Phyllis Eileen Moore, age 94, of Johnson City, passed away on Monday, April 21, 2014 at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. Born on November 13, 1919 in Warren, OH, she was a daughter of the late Floyd E and Freda Brown Pardee. Mrs. Moore was a proud World War II veteran serving in the United States Navy. She was a housewife and a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a member of Chestoa Baptist Church and the American Legion, Erwin and Johnson City chapters.
Sherman Lee Wilson -
Sherman Lee Wilson, age 70, of Erwin, passed away on Tuesday, April 22, 2014. He was a native of Washington County and a son of the late Isham and Rosa Starnes Wilson. Mr. Wilson retired as a carpenter. Sherman loved bluegrass very much and he enjoyed Saturday night bluegrass at David Thompsoní Produce on highway 107. He also loved gardening and working in his yard and he loved his family very much. Sherman was a happy fellow and always had a great personality. Sherman is preceded in death by his brother: Edd D Wilson and two brothers-in-law: Herman Huskins and James P Shelton.

Helena Jewell Dunbar -
Helena Jewell Dunbar, age 97, of Erwin, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2014 at the Unicoi County Memorial Hospital. She was a native of Washington County and a daughter of the late J.R., Sr. and Sallie Elizabeth Broyles Dunbar. Ms. Dunbar graduated from East Tennessee State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree. She taught school at Martinís Chapel and UCHS. While at UCHS she taught typing, other business related subjects, and history. Jewell was a charter member of Evergreen Free Will Baptist Church since the 1920ís, formerly Hazenís Chapel Free Will Baptist. She served as clerk of the Eastern Quarterly Meeting of the Union Association. Helena worked in the Ladies Auxiliary on the local level, district level, and the association level. She attended every national convention of the FWB that she was able to. She was an officer at the Sunday School Convention of the Union Association. She was a member of the Business and Professional Womenís Club. Jewell coordinated and directed Vacation Bible School for many years and held two week long Bible Schools. She directed many church dramas, was active in the youth work on the association level, took the youth to many youth meetings, and was instrumental in establishing the permanent Free Will Baptist Camp on Camp Creek in Greeneville, TN. At her church she spearheaded the organization of the Womenís Auxiliary serving as president and held many other offices. She also served in various offices of the district and associational Women Nationally Active for Christ. At her church she organized an auxiliary for young girls called the Go-Tell Auxiliary. Jewell also served as church secretary for many years. In addition to her parents Jewell is preceded in death by brothers; Warren Dunbar, J.R. Dunbar, Jr., and Calvin Dunbar and one nephew, John Dunbar.
Nancy Lou Duncan -
Nancy Lou Duncan, age 66, 806 N. Main Avenue, Erwin went to be with the Lord on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014. She died peacefully at her home surrounded by her family. Ms. Duncan was born in Washington County and was a lifelong resident of Erwin. She is a daughter of Allie Lane, and the late Clyde Wilson Lane . Ms. Duncan was a member of Embreeville Church of Christ. She was a homemaker, and she loved her family very much. Other than her father she was preceded in death by a brother, James E. Lane.
Olene Miller Ledford -
Olene Miller Ledford, age 79, 1030 Rock Creek Road, Erwin, TN went to be with the Lord Wednesday morning, April 16, 2014 following a lengthy illne ss. She was a daughter of the late Garfield and Ethel Ann Bailey Miller and a native of Red Hill Community, Mitchell County, NC. Mrs. Ledford had resided in Erwin most of her life. She was a member of Canah Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. She retired from Johnson City Medical Center Hospital in 1996 with 30 years of service. Mrs. Ledford was a devoted and wonderful mother to her children and grandchildren.

Jeanette Engle, age 83, of 172 Engle Street, Erwin, passed away on Sunday, April 13, 2014. She was a native of Unicoi County and a daughter of the late Alex and Lou Collins Masters. She owned and operated Engleís Grocery along with her husband, Harvey Engle. Jeanette was a member of Chestoa Baptist Church where she was a former pianist, choir member, taught the ladies Sunday School Class, and served as Church Secretary. She was recognized by the Holston Baptist Association as Church Secretary of the year. In addition to her parents, Jeanette is preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Engle.

Kelley Genan Peterson, 26, formerly of Morristown, TN, passed away March 18, 2014 in Wauiku Maui, HI., from injuries sustained in a car accident. She was born in Houston, TX on February 6, 1988 but grew up in Morristown. She attended West Elementary, Lincoln Heights Middle School, and graduated from Morristown West High School class of 2006. Kelley was a member of Noe's Chapel United Methodist Church.

Michael Vernon Keesecker -
Michael Vernon Keesecker, age 67, passed away Monday morning, April 7, 2014 in the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center following a lengthy illness. Mr. Keesecker was born September 10, 1946 and was a son of the late P.M. and Pauline Brummett Keesecker. He had resided with his family in Erwin for the past two years. He was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Keesecker was an Army Veteran of the Vietnam War where he proudly served his country as a NATO courier. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

Mr. Edsel "Merrel" Banner, 76, of Hoschton, passed away on March 25, 2014 after a long illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Kelly and Maggie Banner, of Erwin, TN and sister, Jocelyn Banner James. He is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Martha Jenkins Banner, Hoschton, GA; daughters, Lisa Banner-OíConnor, Hoschton, GA, Maria and Alan Cleveland, Suwanee, GA, Sonja and Jim Bullard, Cumming, GA; grandchildren, Weston and Walker Cleveland, Kennedy and Griffin Bramer, Brad, Ben and Baileigh Bullard; sister, Phyllis Banner Rader, Huntsville, AL; brother, Thomas Alvin and Lois Ann Banner, Dinwiddie, VA; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Stewart and Betty Jo Martin, Buford, GA; nieces and nephews. Mr. Banner was born January 11, 1938 in Erwin, TN. He was a 1955 graduate of Erwin High School. He attended East Tennessee State College and Mercer University. He worked for Dittler Brothers for seventeen years in Atlanta. He was owner of AlphaGraphics in Tucker and Norcross. He attended Hamilton Mill United Methodist Church in Dacula, GA. Memorial Service was be held at on Friday, March 28, 2014 at Hamilton Mill United Methodist Church, Dacula, GA with Dr. Jason Mincey officiating. The family received friends at the funeral home on Thursday, March 27, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Halcyon Hospice in memory of Merrel Banner.

Helen passed away on Sat, Apr 5, 2014, losing her 1-1/2 year battle with lung cancer. Born on Oct 22, 1935 in Mobile, AL, she resided 32 years in Whispering Pines, Johnson City, TN, where she retired from General Shale Brick, spent 6+ years supporting her daughters as an avid band booster for the UCHS marching band, and enjoyed 10 years houseboating on Watauga Lake at Lakeshore Marina G-Dock. She has lived in Orange Beach, AL, for the past 15 years with her beloved husband of 54 years, Morris "Duke" E. Crane Jr.

Oscar Henderson Powers, age 89, of Erwin, passed away on Friday, April 4, 2014, at his residence. Mr. Powers was born in Wise Virginia and a son of the late Harmon and Carrie Dotson Powers. Oscar served in WWII and was awarded the Purple Heart during his service with the U. S.Army. He worked for the U M W A, as a crane operator, retiring in 1981. Oscar was a member of Fellowship Freewill Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, Oscar is preceded in death by his brother; Harmon Powers and a sister; Crestville.

Margueritte Alice Gouge, age 66, 102 Hughes Lane, Erwin, died Thursday, March 27, 2014, at her residence. Mrs. Gouge was a lifelong resident of Unicoi County and daughter of the late Carse and Jesse Anna Hoyle Tipton. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Gouge was of the Protestant Faith. Other than her parents , she was preceded in death by a daughter, Anita Engle Keever and a brother Darrell Hoyle.
