Blanche Foster -
Blanche Foster, 74, of Erwin, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, August 16, 2014, after a lengthy illness. She was a native and lifelong resident of Unicoi County and a daughter of the late Arthur and Ada Price Edwards. She was a faithful member of Pathway Freewill Baptist Church where she enjoyed singing in the choir, church homecomings and other various church events. She loved to cook and was a very humble and godly woman. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Emmert O. Foster, by an infant daughter, Mary Lou Foster, by one sister, Stella Kaywood, and by three Brothers, Dennis Edwards, Dewitt Edwards, and Arthur Edwards Jr. Blanche leaves behind to cherish her memory:

Helen O. “Miss Helen” Sherwood -
Helen O. “Miss Helen” Sherwood, 86, passed away on Sunday, August 17, 2014, in Mechanicsville, VA. She was a native of Erwin and a daughter of the late Leslie D. and Lucille Peters Oakley. She graduated from Tusculum College in 1950. Helen taught school in Maryland and also in West Germany where her late husband was stationed while serving in the U.S. Army. Helen was a founder and originator of First Baptist Church Day Care Center, from which she later retired. In addition to her parents, Helen is preceded in death by her husband: Samuel R. Sherwood in 2011.

Mary Ellen Kennedy -
Mary Ellen Kennedy, age 84, 1126 East Erwin Road, Erwin, passed away Sunday, August 17, 2014, in the Unicoi County Memorial Hospital. She was a d aughter of the late Bascom Thomas Whitson and Emmaline Jones Whitson. Ms. Kennedy was born in Relief, NC and had lived in Wilmington, DE before making her home in Erwin in 1989. She had worked for Christiana Care UNA in Delaware as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Ms. Kennedy attended the Assembly of God Church. Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Brown and Tom Whitson and a sister, Mae Steadman.

Elizabeth Fox Steffey -
Elizabeth Fox Steffey, 89, of Little Rock, Arkansas passed away on Monday, August 11, 2014. Elizabeth was born in Dante, Virginia and a daughter of the late Van E and Cora Phillips Fox. Elizabeth and her husband Bill moved to Erwin, TN in 1956, where they were active and long-time members of Centenary United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Joy Circle, Get Acquainted Club, and the Garland Sunday School Class. Libby helped at UCM Hospital with the Auxiliary and Gift Shop. She and Bill enjoyed traveling, especially with the family, friends, and members of the church. In 2001, they relocated to Little Rock. In addition to her parents, Elizabeth in preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, W.A. (Bill) Steffey.

L.D. (O’Brien ) Breen -
L.D. (O’Brien ) Breen age 59, of Erwin, passed away at his home on Monday, August 11, 2014. Mr. Breen was a native of Chenute, Kansas and a son of the late Leo David, Sr. and Nita Breen. He served four years with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam Conflict. He had worked as manager of Nolichucky Gorge Campground in Erwin for over 15 years. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Johnson City.

Faye (F. A.) Randolph Cooper -
Faye (F. A.) Randolph Cooper, age 85, 108 Sam Miller Road, Coffee Ridge Community, Erwin, passed away Friday, August 8, 2014, in the Center on Agi ng, Erwin. She was born in Burnsville, NC, where she lived until 2007 before making her home with her daughter, Jane Wilson, in Erwin. Mrs. Cooper was the daughter of the late Alvin David Randolph and Lennie Jane Parsons Randolph. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Cooper was a member of Little Creek Holiness Church. She enjoyed visiting and praying with people and walked miles and miles to minister in prayer and take meals. Mrs. Cooper also enjoyed gardening. Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Cooper in 1995; two sons, Keith Ray Cooper and Kenny Reese Cooper in 1979; one granddaughter, Chandra Cooper in 2002; four brothers, Ray, Wade, Paul and Alvin Randolph, Jr. and two sisters, Mae Tipton and Hattie Stevens.

WALKER, SUE JANET OVERTON, was born January 30, 1927 to W.B. (Wilson Bass) and Effie Lew (White) Overton of Erwin, TN. She had two brothers and a sister: Aahmes Tyler Overton (Gladys Wolpert) and (Thommie Rhodes), Rev. Wilson Burney Overton (Miriam Card) and Glenda Overton Tilson (Glenn). She was a very proud “Golden Pioneer” graduate of Tusculum College, Class of 1948. In 1950, she married her soul mate, Orby James Walker, son of John Monroe Sterling Greene Walker and Jessie Myrtle Steele. The couple moved to Knoxville and in 1958 their only daughter was born, Robin Steele Walker. Suzy had nephews and nieces: Aahmes and Marilyn Overton, Bob and Ann Overton, Patricia Watson, Miriam and Sam Lawhorn, Georgann and Tom Byerly, Judy Stansberry, Wilson and Brenda Overton, Glenn and Susan Tilson, Lew and Doug Higgins, David and Gina-Marie Tilson, and Janet and Allen Green. From Orby’s side were Fred and Ted Walker, Margie and Ashley Elledge, Sylvia and George Hunter, Shirley Darnel, and Jewel Harvey. She also had numerous great-nieces and nephews. Orby passed away in December of 1996. Suzy, Orby and Robin were all members of Graystone Presbyterian Church where Suzy served as an Elder, Sunday School Superintendant and several terms as Clerk of Session. There they have a strong faith family. In 1960 Thomas Newland hired Suzy to be his Administrative Secretary at Fort Sanders Presbyterian Hospital. Suzy was proud to have earned the professional title of “Certified Professional Secretary” and was active in her professional organization, IAAP. She was several times recognized as the local Secretary of the Year and once progressed to the International SOTY competition where she placed second.

Arnold W. “Bill” Berry -
Arnold W. “Bill” Berry, age 64, passed away on Sunday, August3, 2014. He was a native of Washington County Tennessee and a son of the late Arnold and Frances Elliott Berry. Bill served in the United States Air Force serving through two tour duties in Vietnam. He had been employed for the past thirty five years as a control tech at Johnson Controls. Bill was a member of Evergreen Freewill Baptist, Eastman Hiking Club and Appalachian Trail Association.

Glenna Sue Cantrell Mullins Rowland -
Glenna Sue Cantrell Mullins Rowland, 136 Jackson Love Circle, Erwin passed Sunday, August 3, 2014 in the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital foll owing a brief battle with cancer. She was a lifelong resident of Erwin and a daughter of the late James and Media Metcalf Cantrell. Mrs. Rowland was a homemaker. She attended Trinity Free Will Baptist Church.

Helen Ray -
Helen Ray, age 90, passed away on Saturday, August 2, 2014, at her daughters residence. Helen is a native of Dungannon Virginia and a daughter of the late Homer and Ollie Dooley Trivette. She was a homemaker and a member of Chestoa Baptist Church since 1979. In addition to her parents, Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Ray in 1995, daughter: Barbara Sue Beam, of Asheville, Brothers: Ray Trivette and Darris Trivette, Michigan, sisters: Estelle Nickles, Indianapolis, IN, Beatrice Donaldson, Dungannon, VA, and Pauline Ray, Portage, MI.

J.B. Salts -
J.B. Salts, 82, of Erwin, TN passed on Saturday, August 2, 2014 in the James H. Quillen VA Community Living Center. He was a son of the late Wil liam and Lula Nelson Salts. Mr. Salts was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He retired from CSX Railroad after 39 years of service as a yardmaster.
