Hattie Wilcox McCourry, 81, of Cherry Lane, Burnsville, N.C., died Monday, July 19, 2010, at her home.
Born in Mitchell County, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Rev. Handy and Fairene Forbes Wilcox. She was the wife of the Rev. Troy McCourry, who died April 9, 2009.
Mrs. McCourry, along with her husband and son, owned and operated Troy’s Greenhouse and Variety for more than 52 years.
She was a loyal pastor’s wife during Troy’s 27 years at Southside Freewill Baptist Church in Erwin and 23 years at Pensacola Freewill Baptist Church.
Mrs. McCourry was preceded in death by brothers and sister, Bruce, Ralph, Cellie, Alfred and Sam Wilcox. She will long be remembered for her loving, caring and generous nature.
Survivors include her son, Wade McCourry of the home; sisters and brothers, Janie Whitson and husband, Brooks, of Unicoi, Claude Wilcox and wife, Patricia and Bonnie Bowman and husband, Hugh, all of Kingsport, Ronnie Wilcox and wife, Patty, of Mars Hill, N.C., and Jim Wilcox and wife, Wanda, of Unicoi; her McCourry brothers- and sisters-in-law; a host of nieces and nephews; and a special friend and caregiver, Louise Honeycutt.
Funeral services were held at 8 p.m. Thursday, July 22, at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Burnsville. The Revs. Bobby Revis, Frank Cable and Roger Whitson officiated. A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 23, at Holcombe Cemetery in Burnsville.

RAY GARLAND - ERWIN
Ray Garland, 77, 440 Love St., Erwin, died Saturday, July 24, 2010, at his residence.
Mr. Garland was a native of Forbes, N.C., and a son of the late Clayton and Blanche Webb Garland.
He served in the military police with the U.S. Army in Korea and Japan during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Garland was a skilled home builder during his working career. In this he fulfilled his passion of constructing quality homes for families, often when traveling out of state to do his work which he enjoyed very much.
Mr. Garland recently worked at McDonald’s, where he made many friends.
He was a Christian.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Garland, with whom he did much of his work, and his beloved twin sister, who died at birth, Mary Sue Garland.
Survivors include his wife, Carole Ann Hale Garland; two daughters, Natalie Artrip, Erwin, and Gae Bailey and husband, Stacy, Johnson City; one son, Randy Garland and wife, Vickie, Erwin; one sister, Annette Byrd and husband, Jack, Bakersville, N.C.; one sister-in-law, Patsy Ruth Wiccard, Galatin; four grandchildren, Jamie Rice and husband, Matthew, Erwin, Lindsey Garland, Erwin, Ashley Artrip, Erwin, and Ryan McInturff, Jonesborough; and nieces and nephews Donna, Cynthia, Stephen, Mark and Dan and many other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 7 p.m. Monday, July 26, in the Valley Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Ferrell Peterson officiated. Vocal selections were provided by Danny Byrd and Danny Barnes.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 27, at Mountain Home National Cemetery with military graveside honors. Honorary pallbearers are L.B. Heatherly, Danny Barnes, Matt Rice, Dan Webb, Dan Byrd, Drew Howell, Dustin Street, James Fair, Charles S. Price and Edward L. Price. Those attending the graveside services are asked to meet at Mountain Home National Cemetery at 10:50 a.m.

ESSIE DEATON FOSTER - ERWIN
Essie Deaton Foster, age 91, formerly of 102 Polk St., Erwin, died Monday, July 19, 2010, at the Center on Aging and Health.
Mrs. Foster was a native of Yancey County, N.C., but had lived most of her life in Unicoi County. She was a daughter of the late Rev. James and Cora Hampton Deaton.
Mrs. Foster was a homemaker. She was a proud mother of the singing Foster Brother’s Trio.
She was a member of Fellowship Freewill Baptist Church.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Avery Foster, in 1984; one son, Ralph Archie Hughes; grandson, Greg Foster; two brothers, Harvey and Fitzhugh Deaton; five sisters, Julie Norris, Noro Hopson, Ann Engle, Glennie Williams and Pearl Parkey.
Survivors include her sons, Gene Foster and wife, Gaynell, and Arnie Foster and wife, Faye, all of Erwin, and Gerald Foster and wife, Debbie, Flag Pond; seven grandchildren, Allan Foster and wife, Nikki, Nanette Hall, Jordan Foster, Lisa Edwards and husband, Myron, and Kevin Foster and wife, Amanda, all of Erwin, and Tim Foster and Kristi Foster Garcia and husband, David, all of Louisville, Ky.; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mrs. Foster were held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, from the Robert Ledford Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Terry Richardson, Alex Carver and Kevin Laws officiated. Music was provided by Gene, Arnie, Gerald and Alan Foster and Inez Chandler.
Committal services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 22, at Evergreen Cemetery. Pallbearers were Tim, Allan, Kevin, Jordan and Caleb Foster, Myron Edwards and David Garcia.

GLADYS A. HARRIS - ERWIN
Gladys A. Harris, age 96, of Erwin, died Thursday, July 22, 2010.
Mrs. Harris was a native of North Carolina but had lived most of her life in Erwin. She was a daughter of the late Jason and Daisy Peterson Masters.
She worked at Southern Potteries until its closing in 1957, in the cafeteria at Martin Chapel Elementary School and for Industrial Garment until her retirement.
Mrs. Harris was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Frank T. Harris; brothers, Otis Masters and Boyd Masters; sister, Eulah Masters; and great-grandchild, Kaleigh Grace Harris.
Survivors include her sons, Don Harris and wife, Pam, of Brooksville, Fla., John Harris and wife, Floy, of Erwin, Tom Harris and wife, Vicki, of Erwin; grandchildren, Don Harris Jr. and wife, Toni, of Nashville, Susan Robinson and husband, Chris of Knoxville, Stefanie Pyron and husband, Jim, of Piney Flats, Leslie Hatcher and husband, Chris, of Erwin, Stephen Harris and wife, Stephanie, of Mount Juliet, Alan Harris and wife, Daffney, of Johnson City, Julie Wisecarver and husband, Rodney, of Russellville; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Lee Masters of Knoxville; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Dean Sherrill of Erwin.
Funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 24, at Calvary Baptist Church in Erwin. The Rev. David Crutchfield officiated. Music was provided by Gary Amos. Interment followed at Evergreen Cemetery. The deacons of Calvary Baptist Church served as pallbearers.
Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, Building Fund, 540 Adams St., Erwin, TN 37650.

PEARL LEE FLOWERS - JOHNSON CITY
Pearl Lee Flowers, 89, of 3102 Bristol Highway, Johnson City, died Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at Johnson City Medical Center.
Mrs. Flowers was a native of Mitchell County, N.C., and was a daughter of the late John Henry and Mattie Cooper Arrowood.
She was a retired employee of Levi-Strauss and a member of the Church of God.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Robert, in 2000, and by one son, Ronald Scott Salyer.
Survivors include: one daughter, Jackie Flowers of Johnson City; one son, Bobby and Corey Flowers of Kingsport; two brothers, Bert and Pearlie Mae Arrowood of Erwin and Ernest Arrowood of Erwin; one sister, Helen and George Davis of Greeneville; five grandchildren, Janine, Cindy, Michael, Jonathan and Christopher; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 8 p.m. Thursday, July 22, at the Morris-Baker North Chapel with the Rev. George Davis officiating.
Committal services were conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, July 23, in the Monte Vista Memorial Park.
Active pallbearers were selected from family and friends.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Childrens Research Hospital in Memphis or to the American Bible Society.
