LINNIE HENSLEY - ERWIN
Linnie Hensley, 80, of 149 Polk St., Erwin, died Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at Johnson City Medical Center.

A native of Unicoi County, Mrs. Hensley was a daughter of the late James Albert and Atlas Phillips Jones.

She married Bud Hensley Jr. Oct. 2, 1946, in Lancaster, S.C.

Mrs. Hensley was a Baptist.

She lived in Florida for 31 years before moving back to Unicoi County in 1996. She retired from the meat department at Publix Foods in Florida in 1975.

In addition to her husband of 63 years, survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Penny and Gary Pivato of Cocoa, Fla.; brother, Fred Jones of New York; sisters, Ruth Torbjornsen of New York, Hope Pugh, Essex, Md., and Ester Wasson and Louise Gerry, both of Erwin; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday March 5, from the Robert Ledford Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Crutchfield officiating. Burial followed at Roselawn Memory Gardens, Johnson City.

Pallbearers were Mitchell Hensley, Jack Thomas, Rick Phillips, Chris Phillips, John Paul Jones and Chuck Penner.

Robert Ledford Funeral Home was in charge.

DARRELL TIPTON - ERWIN
Darrell Tipton, age 58, of 549 Holston Ave., Erwin, died Saturday, March 6, 2010.

Mr. Tipton was a native of Erwin and a son of the late Page Tipton and Bessie Pauline Mullins Tipton.

He was a Christian, and he was a sports fan who loved football and auto racing.

Mr. Tipton loved old western movies, Clint Eastwood, and was a collector of John Wayne memorabilia.

Survivors include one daughter, Michelle Lynn Tipton of Johnson City; two loving brothers, Denton and Michael Tipton, both of Erwin; two loving sisters, Nora King and husband, Larry, of Unicoi and Brenda Casey and husband, Ronald, of Erwin; and three nephews, Johnathan Tipton of San Diego, Calif., and Christopher Tipton and Patrick Tipton, both of Erwin.

Mr. Tipton fought a courageous battle of two years with cancer, and he wanted all cancer survivors to live by his motto, “Live Strong.”

His wish was to be cremated.

Contribution in celebration of his life can be made to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

A memorial service for Mr. Tipton will be held at a later date.

MARGIE M. OLLIS - ERWIN
Margie M. Ollis, age 81, of Erwin, died Thursday, March 4, 2010, at Johnson City Medical Center.

Mrs. Ollis was a native of Wythe County, Va., and the daughter of the late S.G. and Mary Jane Taylor Manuel.

She was a member of Erwin Pentecostal Holiness Church of Erwin. She worked at First Tennessee Bank until her retirement in August of 1989.

Other than her parents, Mrs. Ollis was preceded in death by brother, Eldridge Manuel; sister, Nina Dunford; and foster brother, Dorsey Manuel.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Howard Ollis; daughter, Tracy Jane Hoilman and husband, Tracy, of Erwin; granddaughter, Chelsea Hoilman and fiancé, Ricky Hensley of Erwin; sisters: Ruby Dunning, of Falcon, N.C., Laura Coley, of Wytheville, Va., and Edna Coleman, of Pulaski, Va.; brother, Garland Manuel, of Max Meadows, Va.; special honorary daughter, Carolyn Brooks, of Erwin; special niece and nephew, Vickie Dunford Duncan and husband, Steve, of Johnson City, and Danny Dunford and wife, Carrie, of Erwin; and several additional nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, March 6, at 7 p.m. at Erwin Pentecostal Holiness Church. The Revs. James Dunn and Earl Ragland officiated. Vocal selections were provided by Jamie Hughes and Jimmy Dunn.

Graveside services were held Sunday, March 7, at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers were deacons of Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Valley Funeral Home was in charge.

RONALD ODELL PETERSON - ERWIN
Ronald Odell Peterson, 62, of Erwin died Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010,at Johnson City Medical Center.

Mr. Peterson was a Unicoi County native and was the son of Virginia P. Street and the late Odell Peterson.

He served in the U.S. Navy and was a Methodist.

Mr. Peterson retired after 25 years of service at Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem, N.C., as a maintenance engineer.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his only son, Matthew Odell Peterson; and his step-father, Ralph C. Street.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his three brothers and two sisters-in-law; Harold and Jennifer Peterson, Keith Peterson and Terry and Kellie Peterson; one sister and brother-in-law, Cindy and Jeff Foster; step-sister, Karen; step-brother, Dwight; his best little buddy, a yorkie Opie; a special friend, Neal; and two nieces, Alice and Ashley; several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive, including aunt and uncle, Michelle and Frank McLeod and uncle Marvin Peterson.

A private memorial service was held Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010.

Burial will be held at a later date in the Peterson Cemetery in Poplar, N.C.

Cremation Society of Northeast Tennessee is in charge.

ROY H. TINKER - ERWIN
Roy H. Tinker, age 85, of Erwin, died Saturday March 6, 2010, at Johnson City Medical Center.

Mr. Tinker was a lifelong resident of Unicoi County and was a son of the late John and Frances Mae Higgins Tinker.

He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Erwin and retired from the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency with 25 years of service representing Unicoi County.

Mr. Tinker also worked as a security officer for eight years with Murray Guard Security Corp., located at Nuclear Fuel Services in Erwin.

He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army with the Company C, 142nd Infantry Division, serving in the European Africa Middle Eastern Theater, where he was wounded off the coast of Naples, Italy. He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal, a Bronze Star, and the EAME Ribbon.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Marie Tilson Tinker; a step-daughter, Betty Lou Miller Clark; three sisters, Jeanetta Tinker, Hazel Tinker Street and Ruth Clouse; and three brothers, Ralph, Gene and Bruce Tinker.

He called Unicoi County Memorial Hospital’s long-term care unit “home” and was officially named as a member of the 2009 Who’s Who in Tennessee Nursing Homes for Lifetime Achievement by the Tennessee Health Care Association.

Survivors include two step-grandsons and their families, Danny Bishop and Tommy Clark; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth Tinker, Kathleen Pierson, Maxine Swanner, Dorothy and Don Toohy, Jewel and John Martin, June Tilson and Thomas and Shirley Tilson; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 10, at 3 p.m. in the Robert Ledford Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Crutchfield officiating. Music will be provided by Phyllis Bennett and Gary Amos.

Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery with military honors provided by the Boone Dam Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4933.

Pallbearers will be Rex Timbs, Andy McIntosh, Ralph Sparks, Phil Hardin, Jim Flowers, Gene Ramsey, Randy Bailey, Dallas Lloyd and Jewell Stockton. Honorary pallbearers will be the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency personnel.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of the service Wednesday at the funeral home, and at other times at the home of Roland and Linda Bailey, 605 S. Mohawk Ave., Erwin.

SUE E. BRADLEY FOSTER - ERWIN
Sue Emeline Bradley Foster, age 76, 1034 Carolina Ave., Erwin, died Friday, March 5, 2010, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital in Elizabethton.

Mrs. Foster was a native of Washington County but had lived in Unicoi County since 1982. She was a daughter of the late Matt and Dora Austin Bradley.

She attended Evergreen Free Will Baptist Church in Erwin. She was a seamstress, retiring in 1983 from Industrial Garment.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Burnie, Bill and Bob Bradley.

She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Arnold Foster; one sister, Louise Gilbert, of Buford, Ga.; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Sue E. Bradley Foster were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 7, from the Robert Ledford Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Talmadge Brown officiating. Music was provided by Allan Foster and Inez Chandler.

Pallbearers were Bill, James, Brian, Phillip and Matt Bradley and Andy McIntosh. Honorary pallbearers were Roger and Steve Bradley.

Committal services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 8, at Roselawn Memory Gardens, Johnson City.

Robert Ledford Funeral Home was in charge.

CARROLL DEAN WEBB - Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Carroll Dean Webb, age 62, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, at his residence.

Mr. Webb was a native of Erwin and the son of Geneva Hughes Webb and the late Clayton Webb, who died in 1993.

He served in the U.S. Army. He worked with area farmers during his life and was a Free Will Baptist.

In addition to his mother, survivors include sisters, Joann Bogart of Bluff City, Pat Prout of Boone, N.C., Phyllis Watson of Florida; brother, Jerry Wayne Webb of Erwin; and several nieces and nephews.

Military graveside services, provided by the Tennessee Army National Guard, were held Thursday, March 4, at 1 p.m. at Mountain Home National Cemetery, Johnson City. The Rev. Ulis Miller officiated.

Valley Funeral Home was in charge.
